Make a Hypothesis
A hypothesis is a specific, testable prediction about what you expect to happen in your experiment. It should be based on the background research you performed, not a random guess.
Here's a checklist to consider when writing a hypothesis:
- Is your hypothesis based on your research of a topic?
- Can your hypothesis be tested?
- Does your hypothesis include independent and dependent variables?
The independent variable is what the scientist changes during the experiment.
The dependent variable is what the scientist observes or measures to see how it responds.
Example:
- Question: Which paper towel is strongest when wet?
- Hypothesis: Paper Towel A will be the strongest when wet because it is the thickest and costs more than Towels B and C.
- Independent Variable: Brand of paper towel
- Dependent Variable: Strength of paper towel
Note: When comparing different brands, do not use brand names. Label each brand with a letter. In the conclusion, you can reveal the brand.
